Dr George Hopkins: Weight Loss Surgery

Dr George Hopkins is the founder of Metabolic GI Surgery Brisbane and a visiting Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric surgeon at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside. In the last two decades Dr Hopkins has been a leading exponent of new and emerging bariatric procedures and techniques.

Most of Dr Hopkins’ general surgical practice is in the field of bariatric and revisional bariatric procedures. He has published a number of articles in both local and international peer reviewed journals, and presented at multiple meetings throughout Australia. Dr Hopkins has memberships with the following: Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons; Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS); International Hepatopancreatobiliary Association; and Australian Hepatopancreatobiliary Association. Dr Hopkins is a past president of the Australian & New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS).

Dr Benjamin Dodd: Reflux Surgery, Weight Loss Surgery, Gastric Cancer Surgery and General Surgery

Dr Ben Dodd is a trained Laparoscopic Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon. After completing a Bachelor of Science at the University of Queensland (UQ), Dr Dodd went to complete his medical degree in 2001 at the same institution. General Surgery training was completed in Ireland and the UK and an additional Masters of Science in Advanced Perioperative Care was also completed during these years. Dr Dodd completed his UK Fellowship exam (FRCS) in 2012.

Dr Dodd then returned to Brisbane to obtain additional subspecialty fellowship training in Upper GI surgery (18 months with the Princess Alexandra Hospital) and Bariatric surgery (12 months with the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital). Deciding to stay in Brisbane long term, Dr Dodd then completed the Australasian Fellowship exam (FRACS) in 2015. He has been in Consultant practice at the Royal Brisbane Hospital since 2015.

Dr Dodd is actively involved in the teaching of surgical trainees at the Royal Brisbane. He leads many Upper GI/Bariatric Surgery research projects through the HUB (Hepatic/Upper GI/Bariatric) Research Group, which he co-founded at the RBWH in 2017.

Dr Kevin Lah: General Surgery, Weight Loss Surgery, and Reflux Surgery

Dr Kevin Lah is a General Surgeon specialising in Upper Gastrointestinal (GI), Weight Management (Bariatric) and Complex Hernia Surgeries along with the management of General and Emergency surgeries.

Kevin completed degrees at the University of Queensland in Physiotherapy (BPhty 2006) and Medicine and Surgery (MBBS 2010), then went on to General Surgery training in Queensland.  After obtaining General Surgery Fellowship in 2019, he undertook 3 years of Post-Fellowship Training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Weight Management (Bariatric) Surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the Austin Hospital in Melbourne.

Dr Emily Olive: Hepatobiliary and General Surgeon

Dr Emily Olive is a Hepatobiliary and General surgeon based in Brisbane who is committed to providing excellent and compassionate patient care. Her special interests include liver and pancreatic cancer surgery, biliary and gallbladder surgery, and emergency general surgery.

Dr Olive completed her medical degree at the University of Queensland in 2010 and on completion, she progressed onto the general surgical training in Queensland, working at hospitals throughout the state and achieving FRACS in 2020. Following this, Dr Olive spent a further four years in subspeciality training at hospitals throughout Australia and attained a fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery with AANZHPBA.  Through her training, Dr Olive has gained skills in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery as well complex hepatobiliary surgery.  On completion of her fellowship in 2025, Dr Olive commenced consultant appointments at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital Northside and is a member of RACS, GSA and AANZHBPA. Dr Olive is a current board member of AANZHPBA.

Dr Matthew Honoré: Bariatric Metabolic Surgery, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, General Surgery, Endoscopy

Dr Matthew Honoré is a specialist Bariatric Metabolic, Upper Gastrointestinal, and General Surgeon with a strong commitment to patient centred care.

Matthew completed his medical degree at the University of Queensland, followed by General Surgical training based at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

After qualifying as a surgeon, he undertook an additional three years of advanced education and training, predominantly in Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery working at the busiest bariatric centres in Queensland and New South Wales.  During this time, he gained invaluable experience working alongside and learning from world leaders in the field.

Matthew has a keen interest in Bariatric Metabolic and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery including complex and revisional cases. He is passionate about supporting patients through each step of their surgical journey, ensuring comprehensive care at every stage and achieving lasting health outcomes. Matthew is also a GESA-certified endoscopist.

Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife and three boys, playing tennis, and experiencing the outdoors.
